Abstract
Women’s issues have been debated amongst academic scholars at a worldwide range. This dissertation is an analytical study on the status of South Korean women under patriarchy, related to the analysis of the novel "Kim Ji-Young, born 1982". The main purpose of this study is to examine the status of gender inequality of women in South Korea as reflected in literary works such as novels. This study provides feminist concepts related to this research. The author analyzes the data using qualitative research methods developed in the social sciences to enable researchers to study social and cultural phenomena. The author uses a liberal feminist approach, a fictional setting, fictional characters, and social reflection. The source of data come from novel that reflect gender inequality and social settings. To analyze the data, the author uses liberal feminist theory proposed by Betty Friedan, reflection theory by Alan Swingewood, and characterization and setting of fiction theory by William Kenney. The results of this study illustrate that the main woman character experiences a crisis identity because she has to give up her job, health, and dream of becoming a mother.
