Abstract

This study discusses women's subordination and focuses on the representation of blonde women in the movie Legally Blonde through the main character, Elle Woods. The aim of this research is to analyse the ways that Elle experiences and challenges subordination in her personal and academic life. Using a qualitative research method, the study examines scenes and dialogues to reveal patterns of gender inequality. The theoretical framework used is Marxist feminism, that explains women’s oppression caused by the intersection of gender and class, economic power and social status influence the mistreatment of a woman. Previous
research on Little Women and Barbie also shows similar issues of women being limited by stereotypes and societal expectations, which supports this study’s findings. The results reveal Elle faces various forms of subordination, such as being underestimated by her peers, judged for her appearance, and excluded from serious opportunities because Elle does not fit the traditional image of a competent woman
in law. Despite these challenges, Elle challenges the stereotypes by excelling academically, proving Elle’s skills in court, and proving the success for women. This shows that while subordination still exists, women can resist and break through these limitations with determination, intelligence, and confidence.
