Abstract
This thesis, titled "An Analysis of Flouting Maxims on Seasons 19 & 20 of 'Family Guy' Series: Pragmatic Approach," engages with flouting maxims in the animated television show Family Guy, focusing on seasons 19 and 20. The data is analysed using a descriptive qualitative method as this study aims to explore and categorise flouting maxim instances using Grice's (1975) theory of flouting maxims and to assess the implicatures of the show using Levinson's (1983) theory of implicature. The research finds a total of 190 flouting maxim instances within the show with the Maxim of Relevance being flouted the most (68.42% - 130 out of 190 instances), followed by the Maxim of Quality (12.11% - 23 out of 190 instances), the Maxim of quantity at the third (11.05% - 21 out of 190), and the Maxim of Manner being flouted the least (8.42 - 16 out of 190 instances). Furthermore, the study indicates that the majority of implicatures were particularised conversational implicatures, followed by generalised conversational implicatures. For that reason, these findings offer valuable insights into the use of flouting maxims and conversational implicatures in Family Guy, reflecting how humour, satire, and narrative complexity are enhanced with the use of strategic flouting of maxims.
