Abstract

The research entitled “An Analysis of Women’s Language in Enola Holmes 2 Movie: A Sociolinguistics Perspective” aims to find out the women’s language features used by the main female character in Enola Holmes 2 movie using Lakoff theory (1975) of Women’s Language theory. The research will also describe what functions in the women’s features using Pearson’s theory (1985) Women’s Language Functions theory and show the social factors and dimensions situation using Holmes’s theory (1992). The source of data in this study is a movie script from the movie Enola Holmes 2. The descriptive qualitative method was applied in this research to analyze the data. The research findings show 44 data found in the “Enola Holmes 2” movie. There are only 6 features out of 10 used by the female main character, Enola Holmes. Those features are lexical hedges (23) which was the most frequently used feature by Enola Holmes in Enola Holmes 2 movie, intensifiers (9), super-polite form (5), emphatic stress (3), tag question (3), empty adjective (1). Meanwhile, four features of women’s language that did not occur in this movie are avoidance of strong swear words, rising intonation in declarative, hypercorrect grammar, and precise color terms. For the functions, the researcher found there are 6 functions of women’s language employed in the Enola Holmes 2 movie which emphasizes utterance (10) as the most frequent function of women’s language used by Enola Holmes in Enola Holmes 2 movie. This function is expressed through lexical hedges, intensifiers, and emphatic stress. The lowest two are the function expressing feeling (6) that is used in intensifiers and lexical hedges. The third most used function is starting discussion (5) as employed in intensifier and lexical hedges. For the fourth function of women’s language there is asking responses (6) that occur in intensifier, lexical hedges, and tag questions. The fifth commonly employed function by the female main character, Enola Holmes is softening utterance (8) as seen in super-polite form and lexical hedges. The last function is express uncertainty (9) which occurs in lexical hedges and tag questions. Furthermore, the social factors and dimensions that affect women’s language in this movie are low formality setting (23) because the topic usually talks about informal topics (26) as well which mostly take place such as in Sherlock Holmes’ flat, in a street, a park, a home in Whitechapel street, Sarah and Bessie Chapman’s dorm, even in a horse cart. The participants include with whom Enola Homes talking have both distance (13) and intimacy (13) relationships. Lastly, the function of the conversation that happens is more in high informative (27) purpose.
