Abstract

The title of this thesis is “A Comparative Study of the Adaptation between Novel and Film Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Sea of Monsters”. The purposes of this thesis are to explain how is the process of adaptation in the novel Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan adapted into the film with the same title by Thor Freudenthal and the differences between the novel & film versions. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The theories used in this thesis are Pamusuk Eneste's Ekranisasi theory and Robert Stanton's Fictional Elements theory. Both theories are used to analyze the adaptation of fictional elements from novel to film. The results of this thesis show that in the process of adaptation from the novel to the film, there are 29 reductions, 4 additions, and 13 modifications that occur in the theme, plots, characters, settings, and style & tone. In addition, the differences between the novel and the film occur many significant differences in the plots, characters and settings, whereas in the theme and style & tone only have a few differences.
