Abstract

This study aims to analyze music articles on the BBC news portal. This study was made to analyze whether the BBC’s music articles fulfill the unity and coherence that is following what is described by Oshima and Hague (2006). This present research is descriptive qualitative research done by focusing on the elements that can achieve unity which are a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence, and coherence which are repeating key nouns, key nounn substitutes, consistent pronouns, transition signals, and logical order. To analyze Consistent Pronouns and Transition Signals, the researcher uses Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) theory about Reference and Conjunctions. Data were collected by reading and taking a note in nine articles published by BBC in the Music section in July-December 2022. In general, It is found that there are articles that do not include all the elements of coherence. Repetition of Key Nouns, Transition Signals, and Logical Order are found in all the articles. The type used in all the articles is Chronological Order. Key Noun Substitutes are only found in articles 7 and 8. Consistent Pronouns that refers to the key noun are not found only in Article 2.
