Abstract

This study aims to determine the formation of word that appear in America‟s old and modern love song. This research on America old and modern song obtained rich data or words that have various forms of word formation. This study which uses song lyrics as the sources of data is focused on America old and modern love songs where the songs enters the billboards and are born, grow up, and have careers in America. The research method use descriptive qualitative. To analyze the word formation process, this study uses Yule‟s theory (2010) and Plag‟s theory (2002) related to types of word formation. Based on that, it is found that there are blending, inflection, derivation, clipping, and compounding word formation in old American love songs, while blending, inflection, derivation, clipping, compounding, multiple process, acronym, and coinage. The old American love songs contain words that are formed by: blending, inflection, derivation, clipping, and compounding meanwhile modern American love songs nare built by the process: multiple process, acronym, and coinage.
