Abstract

This research was concerned with the conversational features of the main male and female characters in Hagai Levi’s Scenes from a Marriage. The research aimed to describe the conversational features employed by the main male and female characters and to find out the factors that most influenced the use of conversational features of the main male and female characters in the first episode of Scenes from a Marriage. The research used a descriptive qualitative approach supported by tables showing the frequency of data. The data were in utterances uttered by the main male and female characters in the mini-series. Using Pearson’s (1985) Gender & Communication theory, the results showed that there were eleven conversational features employed by the main characters in the series, namely Profanity (3), Hedges (22), Fillers (31), Tag questions (9), Questioning (22), Controlling the topic (4), Interruptions (17), Overlaps (13), Silence (1), and Talk time. Using Hymes’ SPEAKING Framework, the factors that most influenced the characters in employing conversational features in conversation were shown to be Participants, Ends, and Key. The main male character exhibited the conversational features of Fillers the most in the first episode of Hagai Levi’s Scenes from a Marriage.
