Abstract
This study aims to analyze the representation of African American
culture in Wu-Tang: An American Saga Season 1 by applying Stuart
Hall’s (1997) theory of representation. This research uses a
descriptive qualitative method by examining selected dialogues
and scenes through the processes of watching, identifying, and
classifying the data. The analysis focuses on three main aspects:
language and communication, family relationships, and street
survival and masculinity. The findings reveal that the use of slang
and African American Vernacular English (AAVE) represents
identity, solidarity, and shared social experiences within the
African American community; the portrayal of family reflects a
collective kinship system functioning as a survival strategy under
economic and social pressures; while the depiction of street life
illustrates how masculinity and identity are constructed through
loyalty, power, and the struggle for survival. From Stuart Hall’s
perspective, the series does not merely reflect reality but actively
constructs cultural meaning through representational practices in
everyday life, allowing it to be understood as a cultural text that
represents the social experiences of the African American
community.
