Abstract

This study aims to explore the application of B.F. Skinner’s behaviorism theory, particularly operant conditioning, in the animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). The researcher used a qualitative approach to examine selected scenes that illustrate the concepts of positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, punishment, and shaping. Data were gathered through careful observation from dialogues and character behaviors. The results of the study show that operant conditioning plays a significant role in shaping the behavior of the characters. The study concludes that behaviorism theory can explain the behavioral
changes of characters in the film, especially related to personal growth and the decision-making processes of the four analyzed characters: Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, Spot, and Miguel O'Hara. This study contributes to the understanding of literary analysis through the application of psychological theory in film studies.
