Abstract

This study analyzes the film Saltburn (2023) directed by Emerald Fennell using Antonio Gramsci’s theory of hegemony. The research aims to examine how Oliver Quick’s relationship with the Catton family shows privilege and social inequality, and see how the film represents social power and class differences in a broader social context. The method used is qualitative descriptive analysis, focusing on selected scenes, dialogues, and visuals from the film that reflect hegemonic practices. The results show three forms of hegemony that appear throughout the story. Cultural hegemony appears when the Catton family’s lifestyle, manners, and
traditions are accepted as normal and followed by outsiders like Oliver, showing how culture can operate as a subtle form of control. Class-social hegemony is shown through wealth, family connections, and resources that keep the elite in power and maintain their superior position over others. Counter-hegemony appears in Oliver’s manipulation of the Cattons to gain control, but his actions still keep the same class system intact, indicating that resistance does not always change the overall structure.
