Abstract
This research analyzes the character of Maui in Disney’s Moana (2016) using the theory of main character and Carl Gustav Jung’s archetype, focusing on the Trickster archetype. The study examines Maui’s transformation from an arrogant and selfish demigod into a more humble and responsible figure. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research identifies Maui’s arrogant, narcissistic, and self centered traits in the early part of the story, which are rooted in his abandonment as a child and his reliance on his magical hook for self-worth. Through interactions
with Moana, Maui experiences significant character growth, shifting from avoidance of responsibility to actively helping restore the Heart of Te Fiti. The findings show that Maui’s journey reflects a layered characterization that blends pride, insecurity, and redemption, making him not only a trickster figure but also a complex main character whose transformation drives the film’s central message
about humility, courage, and responsibility.
