Abstract

This research studies the English collocation phrases in The Midnight Library novel by Matt Haig and their translation into Indonesian. The aims of this research are to
analyze the English collocations that appear in The Midnight Library novel and to identify the translation procedures used to translate the English collocations in The Midnight Library novel. The researcher implements a qualitative method for collecting and examining the data, which are English collocation phrases. To conduct this research, the researcher applied two main theories, which are the
collocation theory by Michael McCarthy and Felicity O’Dell (2005) for analyzing the English collocations’ types and the translation procedures theory by Vinay and Darbelnet (1995) for identifying the translation procedures. As a result, the types of collocations that were found in this analysis are adjectives and nouns with 42 data, nouns and verbs with 16 data, noun + noun with 6 data, verbs and adverbs with 18
data, and adverbs and adjectives with 8 data. Out of the seven translation procedures proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet, five of them are used by the translator
to translate the collocation phrases. They are borrowing with 2 data, literal translation with 49 data, transposition with 8 data, modulation with 29 data, and adaptation with 2 data.
