Abstract

This research aims to analyze the types of unit shifts that occur in the translation of English subtitles into Indonesian of the Enola Holmes (2020) Movie. The method
of this research is qualitative. The researcher analyzes the data using a qualitative descriptive method. The researcher compared the original Enola Holmes movie script and the Indonesian subtitle and analyzed the unit shifts found using Catford’s theory. The results show 2 (two) types of unit shifts, there are upward rank shift and downward rank shift. From 53 data has been analyzed, the more frequently found
or dominant unit shift type is from phrase into word, which makes up 62,26% with 33 data of the total unit shifts. This shows that translators often simplify phrases into single words to make the subtitles shorter and easier to understand. The second most common is word into phrase, 20,75% with 11 data of the total unit shifts. Other
unit shifts like clause into phrase (9,43%) with 5 data of the total unit shifts and clause into word (7,55%) with 4 data of the total unit shifts occur less rarely. Surprisingly, no examples were found of word into clause and phrase into clause. The translations mostly maintain accuracy and naturalness.
