Abstract

In furtherance to identifying subtitling techniques and evaluating the translation's quality, the objectives of this article are to investigate and categorize the various cultural terms that were discovered in the dialogue of the Elemental movie. By gathering and examining the movie's English and Indonesian subtitles, a descriptive qualitative research methodology was applied. Newmark's theory for categorizing cultural words, Gottlieb's theory for categorizing subtitling techniques, and Nababan's theory for assessing translation quality were the three primary theories employed. The researcher discovered 39 data on Indonesian cultural phrases in the English subtitle translations. The outcome revealed that gesture and habit had the highest quantity of data: ecology (3 or 7.7%), material culture (8 or 20.5%), social culture (11 or 28.2%), social organization (6 or 15.4%), and gestures and habit (11 or 28.2%). Then for the result of subtitling strategies were expansion (9 or 23.7%), paraphrase (7 or 18,4%), transfer (9 or 23.7%), imitation (0 or 0%), transcription (7 or 18,4%), dislocation (0 or 0%), condensation (5 or 13,2%), decimation (0 or 0%), deletion (1 or 2.6%), and resignation (0 or 0%). Furthermore, overall, the cultural terms were translated accurately, acceptably, and readability in the target language. Keywords: Cultural terms, subtitling strategies, quality assessment of translation
