Abstract

The research focuses on investigating the translation of figurative language, specifically simile and hyperbole, in the novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, from English to Indonesian. The study aims to identify the common translation strategies used by the translator and the theory used is translation strategies by Vinay and Derbelnet. I focus on two types of figurative language: simile and hyperbole. There are 50 data that consist of words, phrases, clauses and sentences contain figurative language and it is found that there are 18 simile and 32 hyperboles. This study employs a qualitative descriptive methodology, focusing on the textual data encompassing words and phrases utilized in the novel. The findings indicate the presence of two distinct categories of cultural expressions in the narrative: Simile and Hyperbole. The researcher recommends that future scholars pursue further investigations into figurative language, as it holds the potential to enhance readers' comprehension of the intricate meanings embedded within the novel.
