Abstract

English is one of the languages of communication used worldwide, including in news articles which is inseparable from euphemism and dysphemism, which will affect the news's content, message, and perception. In this regard, the researcher is interested in identifying euphemism and dysphemism as well as the translation techniques used on the BBC News English and BBC News Indonesia related to the Itaewon incident. This research aims to identify: 1) the euphemism and dysphemism expression translated into Indonesian, 2) the translation techniques used by the translator in translating euphemism and dysphemism, and 3) the impact of euphemism and dysphemism on translation techniques in Indonesian. This qualitative descriptive research is used (Molina & Albir, 2002) translation techniques, divided into 18. The results of the study show that 1) euphemism are more frequently used in English and Indonesian news; 2) Established Equivalent is the most frequently used translation technique in translating news from BBC News into Indonesian; 3) The use of translation techniques in translating euphemisms and dysphemism resulting news that are accurate and easily understood by the target readers. In addition, the use of euphemisms makes the news neutral, does not cause moral panic, and respects the victims' families.
