Abstract

The title of this thesis is “Translation Analysis of Idiomatic Expressions in the Movie Subtitle 'Bruce Almighty'”. The aim of this study is to explain the idiomatic types and translation techniques used in the movie subtitles, 'Bruce Almighty'. The method used is descriptive qualitative, and the theory used in this thesis is Charles Hockett’s theory where he described the six idiomatic expressions, however the researcher only used three, namely Slang, Abbreviation and English Phrasal Compound, and Mona Baker's theory of Translation Strategies. According to the study's findings, Slang is common next to English Phrasal compound, whereas Abbreviation is not common. For the results of the translation strategy, it turns out that Translation by a more general word is very common, after that is Translation by paraphrase, however some of them are less accurate, as for omission and more neutral strategies, they are less common, and some results are less accurate, namely translation by a more general word and paraphrase.
