Abstract

This research aims to identify cultural words found in the novel Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon and to analyze the translation procedures applied in translating the novel from English into Indonesian. This study employed a qualitative method by collecting and analyzing data from the novel. This analysis helps to understand how cultural and linguistic contexts influence translation choices and to reveal the procedures applied in the target text. The classification of cultural words follows Newmark's theory, which consists of five categories. The findings reveal 46 cultural words categorized into the following groups: Ecology (4), Material Culture (18), Social Culture (8), Organizations, Customs, Activities, Procedures, and Concepts (7), and Gestures and Habits (9). Furthermore, six out of seven translation procedures proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet were identified in the translation of these cultural words: Borrowing (15), Calque (5), Modulation (1), Equivalence (5). Borrowing and Literal Translation were found to be the most frequently used translation procedures.
