Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the existence of a specific mixture of Indonesian and English language used by the young people in South Jakarta, especially in the Kemang area. The researcher is very impressed with the increasing vocabulary among the young people there. This phenomenon of language mixing, popularly known as the "Jaksel language," refers to the habits of young people who often communicate with each other through a mixture of Indonesian and English. One of the characteristics of this language is the mixture of Indonesian and English in its use in various places, both on mixed social media and on some occasions. In this research, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative research methods through descriptive analysis techniques. The research method used is qualitative, with data collection techniques through interviews, observations, and internet searches. The subjects of this research are most likely the younger generation who live in the South Jakarta area. Those who follow “South Jakarta Language” follow existing trends. “South Jakarta language” causes the use of the correct mother tongue, namely Indonesian, to be off target. The positive impact of this phenomenon is that it can stimulate and increase the confidence of the younger generation to learn English. At the same time, It can lead to misunderstandings, and if it persists, it may diminish young people's connection to the Indonesian language.
