Abstract

This research is titled “A Deconstructive View of Feminism in the 2023 Barbie Live Action Movie”. In this research, the researcher argues that the 2023 live action movie entitled Barbie has numerous incorrect depictions of feminism that harm the original aim of real-life feminism despite the movie’s successful effort of promoting itself to be a movie that supports feminism. This research uses the descriptive-qualitative method as well as Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction to first ascertain, then oppose and overturn the binary hierarchy present in the movie, which is that the 2023 live action movie Barbie supports feminism. The researcher finds that numerous depictions of what people refer to as modern-day feminism contained in the movie show that women very explicitly dominate over men, and that it is assumed to be the norm. This does not line up with the original aim of feminism in any way, and serves to harm the movement because of its false representations that can lead to people harboring hostility towards real-life feminism, to which the researcher arrives at the opposing side of the binary hierarchy.
