Abstract
This study investigates the variation of address terms that occurs in a movie “Avatar: The Way of Water“. The focus of the study is to find the type of address terms and its social factors. In addition, the study uses (Wardhaugh, 2006) theory of address term and (Holmes, 2012) theory of social factors term to assist the writer in comprehending and analyzing the data obtained from the movie. The descriptive qualitative method is used for the research design. The data analyzed was in the form of a conversation taken from the movie by describing and interpreting each context of the data. Based on analysis, the writer found 26 data of address terms which categorized into 7 types of address terms First Name (FN), Last Name (LN), Title plus Last Name (TLN), title only (T), Pet Name (PN). Kinship (K), and lastly Mockery (M). It shows that Mockery is the most common address term in the “Avatar : The Way of Water” movie. There are several social factors that influence the variation of address terms. Each of them has different strengths to give impact in the choice of address term. It can be seen that the social distance scale is the most influential social factor in the use of address terms. Then, it is followed by status scale which also has the most impact in the use of address terms. Keywords: Sociolinguistics, Address terms, Social factors, Avatar: The Way of Water Movie.
