Abstract

Expressing gratitude is not only possible by saying "thank you" or "thanks," there are many other ways for us to express our gratitude to others. This research analyzes thanking expression strategies and the relationship between thanking expression and politeness strategies. This research is entitled "Thanking Expression and Politeness Used on Strangers: A Pragmatics Analysis Based on TikTok Social Experiment." This research was supposed to analyze the thanking expression used by strangers and its relation to politeness strategy. The method used in this research is the descriptive qualitative method, and the theory used in this research is the Thanking Expression Strategies theory by Karin Aijmer and Brown and Levinson Politeness Strategies. The researcher found that thanking is manifested by several forms or expression. The variations are influenced by politeness strategies between speaker to the strangers. Most people use combination implicit-explicit form of thanking expression when they thank to stranger which are influenced by strategy 2 of positive politeness, exaggerate (showing interest, approval, sympathy with the hearer) because by the speaker want to show their sympathy to the hearer.
