Abstract

This research investigates the types and the functions of women's language in the movie used by Lily Cotton and Georgia Cotton. The purposes of this research are to find out women's language features used by Lily Cotton and Georgia Cotton, what is the most dominant feature she used in the movie Ticket to Paradise and to find out the functions of women's language features. The researcher used a descriptive-qualitative method because the data were analyzed, described, verbally and without any Statistic analysis. The data were taken from Lily Cotton and Georgia Cotton's utterances. Then, the data were identified and analyzed based on Lakoff (1975) theory about the types of women's language features and the function based on Pearson (1985) theory. The result of this research is the researcher found nine types of women's language features. They are lexical hedges or fillers, tag questions, rising intonation, empty adjectives, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, super polite forms, avoidance of strong swear words and emphatic stress. The most dominant women's language feature is lexical hedges or fillers with 9 lexical hedges or fillers out of 49 utterances. The function of women's language features by Pearson (1985) from Lily Cotton and Georgia Cotton's utterances are to Express uncertainty, to get responds, to soften utterance, to start discussion, to emphasize, and to express feeling.
