Abstract

This study aims to analyze deixis usage in the speeches of Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak during the 2022 UK leadership debate. It identifies deixis types, referents and compares the deixis choices. The data consists of the debate's utterances, collected from a video of the event about Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss in the UK Prime Minister Candidates face-off Sun debate on July 27 2022 and Sky News Leadership Debate on August 5 2022. The research draws on Levinson (1983) and Yule (1996) for pragmatic analysis and used descriptive qualitative analysis. Sunak used deixis elements 574 times, emphasizing person deixis (413), spatial deixis (6), time deixis (33), social deixis (9), and discourse deixis (113). Liz Truss employed deixis elements 417 times: person deixis (305), spatial deixis (14), time deixis (26), social deixis (3), and discourse deixis (69). Their speeches included 991 deictic expressions overall. Sunak's person deixis underscores personal agency, while Truss adopts a collaborative tone. Both candidates use place deixis to connect with the audience, showing local commitment. Social deixis highlights their Prime Minister aspirations. Discourse deixis differs, with Sunak being direct and Truss employing a diplomatic conversational approach. This reveals their distinct communication styles in the political debate.
