Abstract

This research focuses on the analysis types of taboo words, function of taboo words, and translation technique. The theories used in this study are from Jay (1992) to classify the types of taboo words and a theory from Wardaugh (2006) to classify the function of taboo words. The researcher also analyze translation technique in this study used Molina and Albir (2002) theory. In this study the researchers employed qualitative method. The data are taken from the movie entitled The Irishman. The result of this research are stated as follows. Firstly, four types of taboo words that characters used in The Irishman movie: obscenity with total of 14 data, ephitets with total of 5 data, profanity with total of 5 data and vulgarity with total of one data. Secondly, there are two function of taboo words that characters use in The Irishman movie: to show content with total of 19 data and to draw attention to oneself with total of 6 data. And the last object of this study is translation technique, in this study the researchers found two translation technique used by ther in The Irishman movie: adaptation with total of 18 data and reduction with total of 7 data. After doing identification, classification, and analysis, the conclusion is that taboo words which are used in the movie are expressing the feelings and describing regards intimacy within a group. At the same time, this study aims to find the translator's ideology in translating taboo words.
