Abstract

This research discussed the function of modal verbs and translation procedures in The Greatest Showman movie script, directed by Michael Gracey, from English script into Indonesian subtitles. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The total modal verbs data found were 113. Several functions of modal verbs were discovered in the 30 data analyses obtained, which were related to the theories of Biber et al. and Foley and Hall: 3 abilities, 1 offer, 1 prohibition, 4 possibilities, 2 speculations, 3 permissions, 3 predictions, 2 promises, 1 certainty, 3 volitions, 1 willingness, 3 necessities, 2 obligations, and 1 probability. Then I also examined the translation procedures in the data according to the theory of Vinay and Darbelnet. The results obtained are 12 literal translations, 4 transpositions, 3 modulations, and 11 equivalences.
