Abstract
This research is a descriptive qualitative research that aims to examine politeness strategies in Eighth Grade films and identify positive and negative politeness strategies in all characters in the film. The movie tells a story about Kayla Day is in her final week of eighth grade at Miles Grove Middle School, a public school in a small New York town. She has few to no views on her YouTube motivational vlogs about confidence and self-image. She is voted “Most Quiet” by her classmates because she is nervous and struggling to make friends at school. Meanwhile, her single father, Mark is attempting to connect with her and break her reliance on social media. The research was conducted to answer the following problems. (1) What are the strategies of positive and negative politeness used by the characters in Eighth Grade movie? (2) What is the most dominant strategy used by the characters in Eighth Grade movie?. The researcher employs Brown and Levinson‟s theory of politeness strategies to analyze the politeness strategies used by all the characters in Eighth movie. The script of Eighth Grade movie becomes the data source of the study. Based on the result of analysis, all the characters in the movie applies positive and negative politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson. The results of this study found 33 data in total, which 14 data from positive politeness strategy and 19 data from negative politeness strategy. The most dominant strategy used by all the characters was negative politeness strategies and sub-strategy most often used is be conventionally indirect, the character that often appears in this strategy is Kayla, who is the main character in this movie.
