Abstract

This study aims to examine how medical terminologies are translated from English
into Indonesian by using the translation technique. All the data on medical terms were
derived from the book Basic Pathology by Robbins & Coltrane 8th Ed. and from the
Indonesian translated version Patologi Dasar Robbins & Coltrane Edisi 8. This study
was conducted using a qualitative research method. The theory of translation
technique proposed by Molina and Albir’s (2002) is used in this study as the main
theory, which consists of eighteen techniques. After analyzing the data, it is
concluded that there are ten different techniques that were used to translate the
medical terminologies in the book Basic Pathology by Robbins & Coltrane 8th Ed.
The techniques are borrowing, calque, amplification, reduction, established
equivalent, generalization, particularization, description, modulation, and
transposition. The most frequent technique being used is borrowing with 28 data or or
30,56%. Calque is the second most used technique with 22 data or 26,39%. The
results of this study show that the translator was successful and effective in
translating the message from the source language into the target language.
