Abstract

This study examines anxiety in Jenny Han’s To
All the Boys I Have Loved Before, focusing on the
protagonist, Lara Jean. Anxiety plays a significant role
in adolescent development, particularly during the
transition to maturity. Using Sigmund Freud’s theory of
anxiety and a literary criticism approach, this research
analyzes the types and causes of anxiety experienced by
Lara Jean. Data were collected through close reading
and documentation of relevant passages. The findings
reveal that Lara Jean experiences reality anxiety,
neurotic anxiety, and moral anxiety. Reality anxiety
arises when her secret letters are revealed, leading to
conflict with her sister and avoidance of Josh. Neurotic
anxiety is reflected in her fear of consequences, such as
exposure of the letters and bullying by Peter’s ex-
girlfriend. Moral anxiety emerges from actions that
conflict with social norms and family values. Overall, threat, conflict, and frustration are identified as key
factors contributing to Lara Jean’s anxiety.
