Abstract

This study aims to find lexical errors in students’ translation of The
Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter. The purpose of this research is
to identify the types of lexical errors and the factors that influence
them. The study applies a qualitative descriptive method using the
error analysis framework proposed by Carl James. The data were
collected through a paper-based translation test conducted with
students of the English Department at Nasional University. From eight
students were selected as the sample for analysis. The findings show
a total of 212 lexical errors, classified into Formal Errors of Lexis and
Semantic Errors in Lexis. Formal errors include misselection,
misformation, and distortion, while semantic errors include confusion
of sense relation and collocational errors. The most frequent errors are
distortion and confusion of sense relation. In terms of error factors,
intralingual factors are the most dominant, followed by interlingual
factors, communication strategies, and induced errors. The results
indicate that students face difficulties in lexical accuracy and semantic
precision. This study suggests the need to improve students’ lexical
competence and awareness of contextual meaning in translation
practice.
