Abstract

This study, entitled “Audience Reception of Spider-Man (2002) and
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) Through Reception Theory”, aims
to analyze how audiences interpret and evaluate the original film and
its reboot using Hans Robert Jauss’s Reception Theory, with intrinsic
narrative elements as indicators of audience interpretation.
Employing a descriptive qualitative approach supported by
questionnaire data from viewers who have watched both films, this
research aims to explore audience expectations, reception, and
comparative evaluations of the two films. The findings indicate that
audiences generally perceive Spider-Man (2002) as having stronger
narrative quality and emotional impact, while The Amazing
Spider-Man (2012) is viewed as more modern and relevant to
contemporary audiences. However, many respondents consider both
films to offer relatively comparable narrative quality, suggesting that
reboots are not automatically perceived as inferior. This study
concludes that audience reception of reboots is shaped by shifting
horizons of expectations, nostalgia, and genre development rather
than fixed judgments of quality.
