Abstract
This study analyzes moral conflict in the film Mean Girls (2004)
using mimetic theory and Character Education Theory by Thomas
Lickona. The film shows how the characters face moral dilemmas in
a hierarchical high school environment influenced by peer pressure,
rivalry, and the desire for social acceptance. Through Cady Heron’s
transformation, the story illustrates how imitation of dominant
figures can lead to unethical behavior such as dishonesty and
betrayal. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with
observation and note-taking techniques to examine selected scenes
and dialogues. Mimetic theory explains how imitation influences
moral behavior, while Lickona’s theory analyzes the imbalance
between moral knowing, moral feeling, and moral action. The
findings show that the desire for social status encourages unethical
actions, but the film also presents moral improvement through
self-awareness and responsibility. This study concludes that Mean
Girls reflects moral challenges faced by Millennials in competitive
social environments.
