Abstract
This study aims to analyze the use of positive politeness strategies
and the social factors that influence them in the podcast In Her View
– Beauty Standard Season 1 Episode 3. This study uses a qualitative
descriptive method, with data taken from the utterances of five
women in the podcast, Caroline, Shahnaz, Marissa, KB, and Khai.
Data were collected through documentation techniques, including
transcription and observation, and analyzed based on Brown and
Levinson's (1987) theory of positive politeness and the factors that
influence them. The findings show that there were 28 data containing
positive politeness strategies identified, representing 9 of the 15
positive politeness strategies. The most frequently used strategy was
the use of group identity markers in 5 data, while social distance
emerged as the most dominant influencing factor due to the close
relationship between the speakers and the audience in 8 data. The
discussion shows that positive politeness strategies serve to maintain
solidarity, reduce face-threatening acts, and support open discussion
about beauty standards in a comfortable and inclusive interaction
environment.
