Abstract

This study examines The Potrayal of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and character shifts seen on the main character in Instant Family (2018) using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
as the main theory and characterization theory as support. Employing qualitative descriptive methods, the analysis draws from film scenes, script dialogues, and timestamps to capture moments that reflect changes in character and fulfillment of human needs. Initially uncertain about fostering, Pete and Ellie gradually adapt, showing
increasing empathy, protectiveness, and emotional engagement. Their journey reflects Maslow’s stages—ensuring safety, building love and belonging, supporting esteem, and
reaching self-actualization as they fully embrace their role as parents. Characterization theory highlights Pete’s growth into a protective father figure and Ellie’s transformation
into an emotionally invested mother. The findings show Instant Family as a narrative of personal growth and family formation, illustrating how psychological needs and character development interconnect in film storytelling.
