Abstract

The research, entitled "Hegemony and Counter Hegemony in the Movie Little
Women (2019) by Greta Gerwig," aims to analyze the film's adaptation through the
lens of hegemony using a qualitative descriptive method. It presents an in-depth
analysis of the film, identifying intrinsic elements and highlighting 39 data points:
10 related to hegemony practices and 14 focusing on the counter-hegemony of
characters Jo and Amy in resisting these forces. The analysis includes 10 characters
(comprising 4 major characters and 6 minor characters) and 5 characterizations.
which allows for an exploration of relationship dynamics and emotional
development. The study emphasizes that the film not only retells a classic story but
also critically engages with themes of female resistance, enhancing the audience's
emotional involvement with the characters and their journeys. Additionally, it
delves into counter-hegemony by showcasing how Jo and Amy actively challenge
societal norms, with Jo's determination to become a writer and Amy's pursuit of
artistic recognition exemplifying their defiance against traditional gender roles.
