Abstract
This study aims to find the politeness strategies used by main characters in Black
Panther: Wakanda Forever based on Brown and Levinson’s (1987) theory, and examines
the patterns and social factors influencing these strategies using Holmes’ (2013) framework.
Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the data were collected through observation
and note-taking from the film script. The findings reveal four types of politeness strategies:
bald-on-record (15 data), positive politeness (10), negative politeness (5), and off-record (2).
Bald-on-record was the most dominant, especially in urgent situations or close social
relationships. The most influential social factor was participants, followed by topic, function,
and setting. The study highlights how politeness strategies reflect cross-cultural
communication between African and American contexts, and how social status, emotional
closeness, and conversational context shape language choices. These findings contribute to
pragmatic studies and offer a reference for future research on politeness strategies in literary
and media texts.
