Abstract

using a pragmatic
approach. It explores how language functions as a tool to influence, persuade, and
command others. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method,
analyzing conversations from episodes one to five of the series through Grice's
implicature theory, Austin and Searle’s speech act theory, and Van Dijk’s
manipulation theory. The findings indicate that Dr. Smith frequently violates
conversational maxims, particularly the Maxim of Quality, to provide false
information, and the Maxim of Relevance to mislead. She also uses indirect
speech acts to manipulate emotional responses. These findings enhance the
understanding of linguistic manipulation in fictional and real-life discourse.
This research builds on previous studies of language manipulation,
persuasion, and implicature, further validating its conclusions. The researcher
acknowledges the contributions of linguistic scholars whose works have shaped
the theoretical framework of this study.
