Abstract

Address terms, or the linguistic expressions used to refer to and address
individuals in communication, play a crucial role in interpersonal interactions
across cultures. This study examines the usage of address terms in the film Death
on the Nile, aiming to identify the types of address terms uttered by characters and
uncover the social factors influencing the use of these terms. Employing a
qualitative research approach, including data collection and analysis, the
researcher applies Wardhaugh's theory (2006) to analyze six different types of
address terms and utilizes theories by Ambarwati (2021) and Dungkling (1990) to
analyze the types of mockery terms. Additionally, Holmes' theory (2012) is
employed to identify social factors influencing these address terms, categorized
into scales of social distance, status, formality, and function. The study identifies
124 instances of varied address terms, with the most dominant being First Name
(FN) and Last Name (LN). This research contributes to a deeper understanding of
sociolinguistics and cultural studies, highlighting the dynamic nature of address
terms in reflecting social identities and relationships.
