Abstract
This present research is a descriptive qualitative research which aims at
identifying the grammatical relations and themaic roles used in main clauses
of the short story The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen. This
research used the thematic roles theory by John I. Saeed (2009) in
identifying the types of thematic roles and Linda Thomas’ Beginning
Syntax (1995) as a reference in identifying the construction of grammatical
relations. The analysis is done by focusing mainly on the main clauses of
the narrative text, omitting other dependent clauses and dialogues.
Purposive sampling was employed as a foundational step in the data
collection process. Data were collected by reading the whole text,
segmenting the sentences, extracting clauses, and numbering the data on
separate document. The researcher found a total of 169 main clauses as the
eligible data for analysis. The results show that there are 14 grammatical
patterns used in main clauses. Subject-Verb-Adverbial is the most
commonly used pattern, accounting for 46 of the total data. The second most
common pattern is Subject-Verb-Object, with 29 data points, and the third
is Subject-Verb-Subject Complement, with 26. Furthermore, Agent is the
most common thematic role used in narrative text, accounting for 93
arguments. Following Agent, Theme and Patient are observed with
consecutively 75 and 39 arguments. Other roles such as Location,
Experiencer, Goal, Source, and Instrument also appear, though less
frequently.
