Abstract

Slang is an informal language created by teenagers and certain groups to distinguish
themselves from others. It tends to evolve and change in meaning depend on the
trends. This research focused on the slang words, phrases, and sentences found in
Forrest Gump movie script. The aims of this research were to examine how the
slang is translated into Indonesian and to analyze the types of slang and translation
strategies used in translating the slang contexts. The analysis of the data used a
descriptive qualitative method. This research utilized the theory by Elisa Mattiello
for the types of slang and Karolina Butkuvienė and Lolita Petrulionė for the
translation strategies. The result of this research showed that a total of 86 data of
slang languages were found in Forrest Gump movie from the beginning until the
end. All types of slang words, phrases, and sentences were found in the movie. The
most common type of slang was Vulgarity and Offensiveness with a total of 41 out
of 86 data. And all the translation strategies were used by the translator to translate
the slang language in the movie. The most common strategy is Softening with a
total of 42 out of 86 data.
