Abstract
This research study focuses on sociolinguistics analysis of language functions used
in Persuasion movie. It is aimed to analyze the phenomenon of language functions
in Persuasion movie. This research study uses descriptive qualitative methods
which uses observation collecting data with note taking and contextual in content
analysis data. The data of this research study was obtained from the utterances of
the main character in the movie which contain the language functions and present
the influences of their social factor and social dimension uses Holmes (2013)
theory. The findings of language functions in this research are 72 data, the mostly
frequent language function used was referential function with 26 data. Moreover,
Metalinguistics with 16 data, Expressive with 11 data, Phatic with 8 data, Directive
with 7 data Poetic with 4 data. The social factor and social dimension which
influence mostly participant factor with distance dimension, setting factor with
informal dimension, also topic and functions fact or with referential dimension. It is
indicated that the main character mostly used referential function caused by the
reason that mostly the speaker is not close with the addressee, and they were in
informal situation, and the speaker talk to others to just give information or as a
referential topic and function in this movie.
