Abstract

This research aims to describe sociolinguistic aspects of kinship terms in English and Korean, employing a descriptive qualitative research design. The data consist of kinship terms sourced from a YouTube animated video “Learn Korean with Jadoo," a movie script “Home Alone,” and “Home Alone 2." To ensure data validity, the researcher conducted short interviews with native speakers to gain additional insights into the usage of kinship terms in both languages. The study focuses on kinship terms in English and Korean, utilizing Lounsbury's kinship term theories outlined in Leech (1981). Lounsbury's theory applies principles of classification based on gender, generation, and lineage, emphasizing the differences in family structures, social hierarchies, and gender roles across societies. The findings highlight cultural and linguistic differences in the use and understanding of kinship terms in English and Korean, providing insight into the impact of cultural values on family relationships in these languages.
