Abstract
This Undergraduate Thesis entitled The Translation Analysis of Compound Nouns in the Novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. The aim is to analyze the compoundnoun translation in the novel Jane Eyre (1959). I use the theory from Frank (1972) to classify the compound nouns. The semantic and syntactic strategies by Chesterman (2016) are used as main theory. For the supporting theories, I use synonymy, literal translation and free translation by Newmark (1988), also unitshift and intra-system shift by Catford (1965) as related theories. The other theories are derivation of noun through repetition, whole noun repetition and repetition through affixation by Moeliono (2017). I use qualitative descriptive method by Abdussamad (2021) for collecting and analyzing data. From 30 data out of 181 data, I only focused on seven types of compound noun. There are seven semantic strategies that I use in analyzing the data such as synonymy, distribution change, paraphrase, free translation, derivation of noun through repetition, whole noun repetition and repetition through affixation. Synonymy is the semantic strategy most frequently used in analyzing the data. There are three syntactic strategies utilised, such as unit-shift, literal translation and intra-system shift. Unit-shift is the syntactic strategies which are most frequently used.
