Abstract

This research is a pragmatic research. The main objective of this study is to determine the types of positive politeness strategies used by the characters in the movie Straight Outta Compton. The second aim of this study is to explain the factors that influence the character of using positive politeness strategies. In this context, positive politeness strategies refer to language. This study uses a qualitative approach to analyze data. Data was collected using a purposive sampling technique. The data collection process was collected through note-taking techniques and then analyzed. The results of the data analysis show that there are 9 types of positive politeness strategies used by the characters in the film, the 9 types of positive politeness strategies are strategy 1 paying attention, paying attention to listeners (interests, wants, needs, goods), strategy 2 exaggerating (interest, approval, sympathy), Strategy 3 intensifies listener interest, strategy 6 avoids disagreement. , strategy 8 jokes, strategy 9 confirms or requires S's knowledge and attention to H's wishes, strategy 10 offers, promises, strategy 12 includes S and H in the activity, strategy 15 gives gifts to H (goods, sympathy, understanding, cooperation). The factors found in this study are closeness and circumstances. When the speaker and hearer have a close relationship, they will use positive politeness strategies. Thus, this study provides deeper insights into positive politeness strategies.
