Abstract

The Old Man and the Sea is a novella written by the American author Ernest Hemingway in Cayo Blanco (Cuba). It was the last major work of fiction written by Hemingway that was published during his lifetime. One of his most famous works, it tells the story of Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream off the coast of Cuba. In this study, I will examine the figurative language styles and translation techniques utilized in Sapardi Djoko Darmono's translation of the book The Old Man and the Sea. The purpose of this study is to inform readers of The Old Man and the Sea novels about the many translation strategies and figurative language that may be found in novels. In analyzing this novel, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative design which is an approach to data collection, analysis, and report writing differing from traditional, quantitative approaches. Which means using a number in every data found in the novel. One of the findings of the research in the novel, “He could ruin me by jumping or by a wild rush” is translated into “Ia bisa saja menghancurkanku dengan melompat-lompat atau berlarian bagai gila”. This is a type of figurative language namely personification that is a type of metaphor in which a lifeless object, an animal or abstract ideas are made to act like a person and thereby gives animation, vividness and nearness those things whicabstract idea.
