Abstract

Modern history in the 19th century posed challenges to great religions including Islam regarding among others political ideologies and worldviews. Nationalism as a modern phenomenon in Indonesia had been widely created discourses on the relationship between religion and this modern political belief. This paper shall deal with the discourses on the relationship between Islam and Indonesian nationalism that emerged in the early history of modern Indonesia. Response to the emergence of Indonesian nationalism by both socio-cultural movements and political movements are discussed. The account comes to the conclusion that there had been significant share by Moslem groups in the formation of modern nationalism in Indonesia despite the fact that some Moslem groups had been critical of “secular nationalism”.
