Abstract

The title of this research is “Marxist’s Ideology of Social Classes in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women (2019).” The film Little Women (2019) mainly talks about four sisters are trying to achieve their dreams in the midst of a poor family condition after the Civil War in America in 1861-1865 until they are adults and live their own lives This research aims to find out the concept of base and superstructure and to analyze the representation of class struggle and class conflict from a Marxist perspective, as well as to describe the character and characterization in the film Little Women (2019) by Greta Gerwig. To analyze the data, the theories of base and superstructure as well as class struggle and class conflict under the Marxism philosophy by Karl Marx are used. The notion of Marxism is to fight for social equality and the elimination of social classes that have been harmful to some individuals, notably the proletariat or lower caste. Marxism is an ideology of the workers’ struggle and the foundation of their way of thinking. In addition, the researcher also employs other theories as a guide to address problems in the research questions, hence the theories proposed by Pope (2005); Sutton (1971); and Jones (1968) are also employed to analyze the characters and their characterization in the film. This research is conducted by applying a descriptive qualitative research approach. The data for this research are taken from dialogues and scenes in the film. The findings of this research show that both class struggle and class conflict are depicted through the dialogue of different characters in the film Little Women (2019). The difference in how different characters speak also reveals the base and structure of the society which leads to the differentiation between two different classes. Moreover, the characterization of the characters in the film is depicted through the indirect approach, which also helps to determine their social status
