Abstract

Radicalism has basically been associated with those whose school of thought and its subsequent ideological programs are oriented towards drastic and violent change socially and politically. It also is considered identical with extremism (leftists as well as rightists); in contemporary Indonesia, the word has also been linked to terrorism. While its emergence is widely known as by product of complex factors including vast poverty and deprivation among varied segments of the society in many developing countries, state governments often fail to tackle the problem because of weak position of a given state and because repressive method has not been successful. This situation also applies to Indonesia’s approach to struggling radicalism. The paper is an attempt to explore the roots of radicalism in Indonesia. Result of the study presents contemporary emergence of radical political ideology among leftists political groups that may make use of activism of labor unions and radical elements of separatism in some regions; further the writer refreshes the key factor contributing to radicalism, i.e., deprivation and poverty and recommend stronger state to achieve the goals of the politics of welfare Key words: radicalism, deprivation and poverty, the politics of welfare, threats of ideological separatism
