Abstract

Many translators find non-equivalence to be troublesome, especially translating phrasal verbs that have different meaning. This research is conducted with the aims to discover the matters above through the analysis of translating English phrasal verb in Girl with a Pearl Earring novel and its Indonesian version Gadis dengan AntingAnting Mutiara. The analytical approach for this study is a qualitative method that focuses on non-numerical data. By using Coghill and Biber theory to analyze the type of English phrasal verb and its translation by using Mona Baker‘s translation strategy. The result finds two types of phrasal verb, namely 31% of intransitive phrasal verb and 61.25% transitive phrasal verb and transitive is divided into two types, separable and inseparable phrasal verb, As a result, the most common phrasal verb in the novel is a transitive phrasal verb. Most of Baker‘s translation strategies are applied within the novel; translation a more general word, translation with neutral/less expressive word, translation by paraphrase using related word, translation by paraphrase using unrelated word, and translation by omission. The most dominant translation strategy used by the translator is translation with a more general word with 53 data out of 80 data.
